Why Aluminum and Metal Railing Continue to Grow in Popularity

Modern metal railing systems are one of the most popular choices for today’s decks and outdoor spaces. Aluminum and steel railing products offer a clean appearance, low maintenance requirements, and long-term durability in changing weather conditions.

Many homeowners choose aluminum deck railing because it won’t warp, rot, or require constant staining like traditional wood railing. Powder-coated finishes help resist fading and corrosion, while the sleek profiles work well with both modern and traditional homes.

Cable railing systems are also becoming increasingly popular because they provide a more open view without sacrificing safety. Horizontal cable railing offers a modern, minimal look, while vertical cable systems provide a similar appearance with added code-friendly functionality for families and high-traffic spaces.

Support Beyond the Product

One thing that sets Deck and Rail Supply apart is our hands-on support. We know railing projects can become stressful when materials are missing, measurements are incorrect, or installation details are unclear. Our goal is to help customers avoid those problems before they happen.

Our team provides:

  • Material estimating assistance
  • Product recommendations based on your project goals
  • Help comparing railing systems and styles
  • Guidance for stair and level applications
  • Shipping and delivery coordination
  • Fast answers from experienced staff who understand decking and railing products

If you have a layout or perimeter drawing, we can help estimate the materials needed for your project so you can move forward with confidence.

Railing Categories

Explore our selection of deck railings, with post and rail kits. Infill options include all-aluminum railing with "aluminum baluster" infill, "vertical cable" infill, "horizontal cable" infill, "privacy" infill, and "graspable handrail".

Why Quality Railing Systems Are a Necessity

  • Durability and Longevity: Our railing systems are engineered to withstand the elements. Crafted from premium materials like powder-coated aluminum and stainless steel, these systems resist corrosion, fading, and wear, ensuring years of reliable performance.
  • Easy Installation: Simplify your project with installation-friendly deck railing kits. Components are designed to work together seamlessly, and many systems offer cut-in-field options for customization.
  • Versatile Designs: Create a railing system that complements your style and needs. Choose from various materials, colors, infill options, and post designs to achieve your desired look.
  • Code Compliance: Our railing systems meet or exceed IRC safety standards for residential and commercial projects. We offer solutions in various heights (36" and 42") to comply with local building codes. Always verify specific requirements with your local codes office.

Horizontal and Vertical Cable Railing

Cable railing divides into two distinct categories: horizontal cable runs that attach to posts, and vertical cable runs that attach to rails. Both utilize metal supports such as aluminum, though cable infill can also be used with composite railing systems.

  • Horizontal Cable Railing is popular for its unobstructed views and clean aesthetic. While it can be more costly and requires precise post positioning, many find the look worth the investment.
  • Vertical Cable Railing combines aluminum posts with aluminum-reinforced vertical cable panels. Posts install first, then vertical cable rail kits install between them. This option offers similar visibility to horizontal cable but is more difficult to climb and often more affordable.

Aluminum Railing

Aluminum railings are durable, warrantied against defects such as warping or fading, and attractively priced. Most aluminum systems utilize horizontal top and bottom rails with vertical balusters between, though options like 3-rail systems and drink rails add value and aesthetic appeal.

Composite Railing

Composite railing consists of extruded wood fiber composite coated with cap stock for lasting performance. These systems are robust and fit well with traditional-style homes. Composite railing incorporates various infill options from standard balusters to cable railing and glass. Most composite systems use sleeves that slide over structural posts, with post caps and foot blocks completing the installation.

Stair Railing Kits

Stair railing kits require adjustable components to accommodate varying pitch angles while meeting local building codes. Our stair railing kits include pitch-adjustable brackets and all necessary hardware for proper installation.

Lighting Collections

Lighting collections and systems are often brand specific, especially when it comes to posts caps, and matching colors. Low-Voltage LED lighting is an excelent way to light decks, rails, walk ways and patios.

ADA Handrail Collections

ADA Rail, round graspable rail, secondary rail, and handrail are all terms for a code-compliant single rail (usually round) that attaches outside of the post line to give a continuous graspable rail. Use in addition to guardrail, or use on it's on for non-guardrail applications.

Composite Railing

Composite type railing consists of extruded wood fiber composite coated with a cap stock for an effective and lasting handrail. Composite railings are typically more robust and fit well with traditional-style houses. TimberTech is one of the largest manufacturers in composite; however other products have done well in the market. Composite railing can incorporate a variety of infill options from standard ¾ inch balusters to horizontal cable railing, composite balusters, and even glass. Composite rails still need to attach to posts though. Composite posts used to be a popular product, but for several reasons including cost, weight and design, Composite sleeves are standard. Most composite sleeves are adapted to fit over a 4x4. If you are looking for the least maintenance, structural newel posts made from iron and high-density plastics allow for face mounting of posts and are easily sleeved. Other newel posts like cedar 4x4s and even treated 4x4s work well with composite sleeves. Once newel posts are installed, composite sleeves can be slid over, with the post skirt. The rails and infill can then be attached to the sleeve and post. Post Caps and foot blocks are then added to complete the railing.

Our collections offer comprehensive components, including rail kits, cable rail kits, vertical cable rail kits, posts in various mounting styles, post sleeves, brackets, caps, and low-voltage lighting options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions on railing!
Railing, as we call it, is a "guard" that must meet IRC or ICC requirements to act as a sufficient barrier, depending on application. Railing must be at least 36 inches tall for residential, and 42 inches tall for commercial. The railing must also close all gaps to 4 inches or under, and is refered to as the '4" sphere rule.'
Most manufactured railings are installed between posts. Posts are often available in the same color and 'style' as the railing and can be mounted to the surface of decks or concrete, or to the side of structures. Once posts are properly installed, railing can be cut to length and attached with rail-to-post brackets.
Anything strong enough can be made into railing! However, most railings fall into a couple categories. The first is wood. Wood may seem like the cheapest railing, and treated pine certainty is. However, treated wood, even #2 southern yellow pine is a poor option for railing. It will warp, and will not look good for long. Cedar is a much better option. It stays far more straight, but requires frequent staining, and is prone to cracking. Iron is the next option, and while options like Fortress Fe26 and RDI Excalibur are strong options with durable powder-coating. These railing can rust over time, and if moisture sits in the wrong place, they can eventually fail. However, for the price, they many be the best option! Aluminum is the next logical option. Aluminum can be a concern for railing as thin aluminum can bend easily. However, the system of Aluminum Railing we sell are robust and are rated to handle to the high lateral force needed to pass IRC and ICC codes. Additionally, Aluminum will not rust, so there is less worry about the longevity of the product. In fact, aluminum has become such a popular option for railing, it accounts for the majority of the railing lines we sell. Most system we sell utilize aluminum for the railing and post components, with various infill options such as powder-coated aluminum balusters, pickets, rods and other infill options like stainless steel cable, glass, and more. Other options in railing include: Composite railing, a great look for traditional homes desiring a less modern railing. Composite tends to be the most expensive railing type, but it has great longevity and curb appeal. Vinyl is the other option, similar to composite, but without the flash and the price. Vinyl is a great option for traditional neighborhoods and areas with existing vinyl railing.
What is the difference between Fencing, Handrail, and Railing? Railing, as we talked about, is a rated barrier. Fencing, is also a barrier, but does not have the same code requirements as guardrail. if a structure is under 48" it's probably railing, and if its 48" or over its fencing. Handrail on the other hand is much different. It is not a guard, but a single rail designed to allow people to "hold on" to something, and is usually added to stair railing. For more on this, please see our Fences and Railings blog page, and the Handrail vs. Railing blog page below.
Yes, you can! Some systems are more complex than others. For projects small and big, Deck & Rail Supply is here to help you naviage your online railing purchase! Please call or text: 913-884-3335 or email: sales@deckandrailsupply on your railing project!
You can attach railing kits to existing surfaces like posts, columns, or walls. However, when penetrating the house siding or stucco, be sure to repair the water barrier to mitigate water damage. For this reason, we recommend to consider installing a post at the house line.
